Contemplations on the Book of Jonah the Prophet, by H.H. Pope Shenouda III.
New translation by United Kingdom.
The holy Church’s concern over the story of Jonah the Prophet with the Ninevites has surpassed her concern for many Biblical stories.
She designated for it a feast, preceded by a three-day fast for the whole congregation in strict asceticism. This fast is a prelude to and preparation for the forty days of Lent, always preceding it by two weeks and having the same hymns.
These pages try to explain:
-The beneficial spiritual contemplations inherent in the Book.
-How the story is an exemplar of repentance and of God’s work in saving the souls of His fold, whether gentiles or prophets, and
-How God, in His longsuffering and endurance, always succeeds in winning people.
We present this to you simply as a door to be opened for your own contemplations.
